About Laurel

Hello! I am Laurel, and I love teaching! I have taught English to English learners for more than 9 years, and I really enjoy helping students become more confident and comfortable with all their English skills. I am patient, speak very clearly, and I like hard questions, so don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have. I customize our conversations and lessons to fit your level and challenge you to improve. Learning a language takes a lot of work but is so rewarding—I would love to help you on your courageous journey!

  • Over 9 years experience teaching English in-person, in academic settings, and online.

  • Studied French and International Relations in France for 6 months

  • Over 14 years of experience speaking with, and helping, English learners

Why hire a private teacher?

  • Learn what you will actually use. As a private teacher, I work to understand how you need to use English and which English skills and vocabulary will be most useful to your life. This means that your lessons are customized specifically to you and your goals.

  • Understand English at your level. I have a lot of experience understanding all levels of English, and I will speak at your level so that you can understand the lessons. I have 15 years of experience doing this!

  • Faster progress. You can go at your own speed. Is the topic difficult? We’ll spend more time on it. Is something really easy? We can go quickly through it! When I customize the pace to fit your needs, you can learn things that you don’t know and spend less time on things you already know.

  • Learn American Culture. Want to know which words you can say to friends, but not at work? How to politely say ‘no’? How to write a thank you note? How to have small talk successfully? I can teach the unwritten rules of American manners and culture.

  • Write what you really want to say. Many people use AI to improve their writing. However, there is a big danger using AI when you’re not a native English speaker. AI doesn’t know what you REALLY want to say, so it can often change the meaning of your writing without you realizing it. When I help my students with writing, I take the time to really understand what the students are wanting to say, then help them to use the right vocabulary and grammar to write clearly and make their writing easy-to-understand.

Why the name "Evergreen"?

Evergreen tree leaves stay green all year—every season. Similarly, Evergreen English Studio offers customized lessons no matter the "season" of your life. Whether you are living in an English-speaking country, studying in school, trying to keep up your English, working with English-speaking coworkers, looking for a job, or just want to be able to chat with the other parents at a kid’s birthday party, Evergreen English is here to support your English journey—no matter the season!

Class Options

Important Notes

  • First class is a free 15-30 minute needs assessment.

  • Class prices are listed for standard 50-minute online classes. 25-minute classes available for younger students at half-price.

  • Age: 11+ –Some exceptions can be made based on the child's level and goals. Currently, classes for beginner children under 7 are not offered.

Daily Class Discount: Students who book 4-5 days of 50-minute classes in a week (or 15-20 classes in a month) will receive a 10% tuition discount.

Customized Lesson Classes ($45-$79)

  • Focus on the skills that you need to succeed in everyday life and improve your grammar, vocabulary, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, and/or listening. These classes are designed based on your goals and often include going over lesson material and practice.

  • Homework optional. You may be asked to take a level test.

Academic English ($45-$79)

  • Grade-school and college-level English coaching. These could include lessons on:

  • Academic writing and citations

  • Listening comprehension

  • Academic vocabulary

  • Presentation preparation

  • Study strategies

  • Reading comprehension and speed

  • Test preparation

  • And more!

Professional/Business English ($50+)

  • Training in common English skills used in business environments. Gain confidence explaining your ideas, understanding meeting vocabulary, and writing clear emails.

  • Email Writing

  • Professional Speaking / Business Idioms

  • Presentation prep / Speaking

  • Interview prep ($80+)

Conversation Classes ($29)

  • These classes are perfect for building confidence in speaking and listening as well as keeping your English strong when you cannot practice regularly. Through live corrections and suggestions, increase your vocabulary and perfect your pronunciation.

  • Class topics are based on your interests and needs.

  • Not offered to absolute beginners (student must be able to have a conversation).

Mixed Classes ($39+)

  • Combination lesson and conversation classes allows for a short lesson and speaking practice, each part 25-minutes each.

In-Person Classes

  • Evergreen English Studio is based in the Birmingham, AL area.

  • In-Person classes include an extra in-person fee that is based on meeting location and time.

Laurel is an amazing English teacher. She's extremely kind, calm, and clear in her teaching. Coming from Brazil, it was always really hard for me to speak English naturally in everyday situations without translating from Portuguese. Laurel changed that.
